Individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)

An Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) is a number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which is the tax collection agency in the United States. The IRS issues ITINs to help individuals comply with U.S. tax laws and to facilitate efficient processing and accounting of tax returns and payments for those who are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN).

Unlike other forms of identification, an ITIN has a single purpose: tax filing and reporting. Possessing an ITIN does not make you eligible for benefits such as Social Security or earned income credits that provide refunds to some low-income filers.

ITIN ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Both US residents and non-residents are eligible to apply for ITIN regardless of their immigration status. Both US residents and non-residents can apply for ITIN if they are not eligible for SSN.
